Unconditional Love - Part 7
Cathy was shopping for Gary's birthday present. She wanted to get him something special as he had always been a caring ‘brother’ to her. Pierre suggested giving him one of those display figurines. Cathy felt that it would be too insincere and also a waste of money. She preferred something more practical. After hunting for almost 2 hours, they still couldn't agree on an appropriate gift. By then, Pierre, who had been proposing various options, grew frustrated with fatigue. He couldn't understand why Cathy was making such a fuss over what seemed to him to be an insignificant event. Finally, Cathy picked a polo tee of his favourite colour – bright orange.
Soon it was Gary's red letter day. Cathy and Doris had arranged to be at the chalet early to help with the preparation. Pierre who was having his usual training promised to be there later in the evening in time for the bbq. Both the gals were assigned the delicate task of marinating the food while the Gary and a couple of his pals took care of the dirty job of setting up the pit. It didn't take the gals long to prepare the food and they decided to concoct some drinks with canned mixed fruits. Unable to locate the canned fruits, Cathy queried Gary about it. Gary responded by pointing to the bench near the pit. Not wanting to walk out of the kitchenette, she jokingly asked him to throw it to her. Taking her seriously, Gary actually tossed the can towards her. Caught by surprise, Cathy, who was holding a large glass bowl, decided to use her right foot to cushion the approaching can lest it should burst open upon hitting the ground. She did manage to save the can of mixed fruits but at the expense of her unprotected ankle.
Cathy knelt down in pain with tears welling in her eyes. Realising that he had hurt her with his foolish act, Gary ran up to her to check on her injury. Though she claimed that the pain was bearable, Gary could see that her face was contorting in pain. Feeling apologetic, he insisted on her taking a break. Not wanting to argue with the birthday boy, she agreed and requested to be seated by the beach as the sight of the sea had always had a soothing effect on her. After being helped there by Gary and Doris, she urged them to leave her there to enjoy the cool breeze and to resume with the preparation as the guests had started to arrive.
Cathy was admiring the stars when Gary came to invite her back with a cup of the mixed fruits juice that she would have prepared. Just as she was sipping the drink, Cathy thought she saw something streak across the night sky. It was a meteor. She hastened Gary to help her up on her feet. With a quick and forceful tug, Gary got her off the sand and instinctively placed his hand over her right shoulder to better support her. They each managed to make a wish before the meteor disappeared over the horizon. Unable to believe their luck in having witnessed such a rare phenomenon, they maintained their stance and continued to marvel at the starry sky, hoping for more meteors to appear.
"What a romantic pair!" A wrathful voice pierced through the chilly air.
They were startled by the unexpected remark. Shifting their gaze towards the source, they could make out a familiar fuming face under the dim moonlight. It was Pierre's. Realising that his arm was still on Cathy, Gary stealthily withdrew his hand from her shoulder. But he was too slow. In a blink of an eye, Pierre was already standing behind him. Not only had he had his hand yanked, Gary also received a black eye. He would have received more punches if not for Cathy.
"Stop behaving like a hooligan! I can't take it anymore!"
Feeling betrayed, Pierre turned around and disappeared into the darkness.
